What They're Really Looking For
1
Tell them what isn't already in your file. USC's instruction is explicit: the essay is your chance to share something not elsewhere in the application. Don't restate your rรฉsumรฉ โ reveal a new dimension through a specific story.
2
Be concrete and singular. Pick one experience and go deep. A specific scene with a real person and a real moment of change beats a broad reflection on your whole high-school career.
3
For Honors, prepare to write two more. The South Carolina Honors College sends two prompts after you apply. Budget time for them โ Honors is a distinct, more selective read, and the essays feed top scholarship consideration.
The Official Prompts โ 2026-27
"You will choose an essay prompt from the list provided in the application... The essay is your opportunity to tell us something about yourself that is not already in your application." (The exact prompt list appears inside the application.)
The SC Honors College requires two additional essays plus a recommendation. The prompts are delivered in the Honors application 24โ48 hours after you submit and are not publicly posted.
The #1 Failure Mode
Repeating the application. USC states plainly that the essay is for something "not already in your application" โ and the most common miss is a polished recap of activities and awards the reader already has. The essay should add a dimension, not restate the file.
Weak vs. Strong: Score Benchmarks
"Throughout high school, I have been a dedicated student and leader. As captain of the soccer team and president of the honor society, I learned time management, teamwork, and perseverance. These experiences have prepared me for the challenges of college and I am confident I will thrive at the University of South Carolina."
"Nobody knows I run a 4 a.m. bread route. My uncle's bakery lost its driver, so before school I load the van and hit twelve restaurants while the city is still dark. I've learned the back doors of my whole town, and which cooks will talk and which just nod. It's the most educational thing I do, and it's nowhere else in this application."
