For 2026-27, Clemson University requires no essay for general admission — you can optionally add materials through your applicant portal. The essays that count are for the Calhoun Honors College: a required 650-word essay on your academic interests and goals, a second required essay that is simply one of the seven Common App personal-statement prompts, and an optional third essay for special circumstances. The academic-interests essay is where you show a real, specific intellectual direction — and that you have actually pursued it.

What They're Really Looking For

Be specific about the interest AND its origin. The prompt wants what you are drawn to and the experiences or traits that produced it. A named field plus the concrete moment it clicked beats "I've always loved science."

Show you have actually explored it. The prompt explicitly asks what avenues you have pursued — research, projects, a job, a competition, deep reading. Evidence of self-driven exploration is the single biggest differentiator.

"To the extent you have identified them" is permission, not a loophole. You don't need a life plan, but you do need a genuine direction and honest reflection. Undecided-but-curious is fine — if it is specific and shows real thinking.

Don't waste Essay 2. Your second Honors essay IS your Common App personal statement. Make sure the one on file is your strongest, because Honors reads it too.

Writing a passion essay with no evidence. Clemson Honors asks not just what your academic interests and goals are, but what you have actually done to explore them — and applicants routinely profess love for a field without a single concrete example of pursuing it. A named interest backed by real projects, research, or reading reads as genuine; "I am passionate about medicine" with nothing behind it reads as a template.
