Essay Overview

For 2026-27, the University of Pittsburgh requires no supplemental essay — and the Frederick Honors College has eliminated its separate essay as well. Instead, Pitt reads your personal statement: the Common App essay (or the Pitt Application personal statement). It is required if you are applying for scholarships, to Frederick Honors, test-optional, or as an international student — and recommended for everyone, since Pitt reviews holistically and admits on a rolling basis. So the essay to get right is your main personal statement.

Common App / Pitt Personal Statement Required for scholarship / Honors / test-optional / international; recommended for all 250–650 words Recommended
Supplemental Essay None for 2026-27 Not required
Frederick Honors Essay Discontinued Not required

What They're Really Looking For

1
Your personal statement is the whole game. With no supplement, the Common App essay is where Pitt meets you. Make it a specific, real story that reveals how you think — not a résumé recap.
2
Apply early — Pitt is rolling. Decisions and scholarships go out as applications are read, and spots shrink over time. A strong essay submitted in October beats the same essay sent in February.
3
Honors runs on the same essay. Frederick Honors dropped its own prompt and now reads your Common App essay plus your record — so one strong personal statement does double duty.
4
Show the "why," even without a Why-Pitt prompt. You don't have to name Pitt, but an essay that reveals what you would pursue helps holistic reviewers place you in a specific school or program (Nursing, Engineering, Pharmacy, the Dietrich School).

The Official Prompts — 2026-27

Personal Statement
Recommended250–650 words

Your choice of the seven Common App personal-statement prompts (or the Pitt Application personal statement). Required for scholarship, Honors, test-optional, and international applicants.

Supplemental / Honors Essay
2026-27

Pitt requires no supplemental essay, and the Frederick Honors College discontinued its separate essay. Admission uses your personal statement plus your academic record.

The #1 Failure Mode

⚠️
Most Common Mistake

Treating Pitt as an afterthought because there is no supplement. With no "Why Pitt" prompt and rolling admission, applicants submit a generic personal statement late in the cycle — and both hurt. Pitt reads holistically and fills its class as it goes, so a specific, well-told personal statement submitted early is worth far more than a polished one sent in the spring.

Weak vs. Strong: Score Benchmarks

⚠️ Weak (~55/100)
"Ever since I was young, I have been passionate about helping others and making a difference. Throughout high school I challenged myself with rigorous courses and leadership roles that taught me responsibility, teamwork, and perseverance. I am confident these qualities will help me succeed at Pitt and beyond."
✓ Strong (~84/100)
"My grandmother narrates her cooking in a Cantonese I only half understand, so for years I just watched her hands — the exact quarter-turn of the wrist that folds a dumpling so it won't burst. When she got too tired to cook, I realized I had absorbed the motion without the words. I have been rebuilding her recipes by feel and writing them down in English: me translating a language I never fully learned back to a grandmother who never fully learned mine."
