Then reverse-engineer how your intended major and Rochester's open curriculum will equip you to solve it. Admissions readers reward a coherent throughline: community problem → academic major → named co-curricular resource (Forté Campus, Take Five Scholars, Engineers Without Borders)—all pointing at the same target.

Name the open curriculum explicitly. Rochester's defining feature is its lack of general education requirements and its cluster requirement (three thematically related courses outside your major in two divisions). A strong essay shows you've already thought about a specific cluster you'll pursue or a cross-divisional course pairing that connects to your change goal. Reference actual named courses like "Environmental Impact and Risk Assessment" or "Children's Thinking About Society" rather than generic course titles—this signals you've researched Rochester's actual offerings.
