About the Morrill Scholarship Essay
1
The Morrill Scholarship Program is competitive and selective. The MSP is one of OSU's most prestigious merit scholarships, covering full in-state tuition. If you are applying for the Morrill Scholarship, the essay is the heart of that application — treat it with the same seriousness as any top-school supplement.
2
The MSP essay focuses on leadership, service, and community impact. The program explicitly looks for students who have demonstrated leadership in service to their communities. Strong essays show concrete outcomes: what changed, who was affected, and what you learned — not just a title or role you held.
3
Most OSU applicants write zero supplemental essays. Your Common App personal statement carries nearly all the narrative weight. Make sure it reflects your strongest, most specific self — there is no other essay to compensate if it is generic.
Morrill Scholarship Essay — 2025-26
The Morrill Scholarship Program essay asks applicants to describe their leadership experience and community engagement. Prompts vary slightly by year; check the official MSP application for the exact 2025-26 wording. Ohio State does not require any supplemental essays for general admission.
Morrill Scholarship: #1 Failure Mode
Describing a leadership title without showing specific impact. The Morrill Scholarship program looks for students who created measurable change in their communities. An essay that lists a role — student government president, club captain — without explaining what concretely changed because of that role will not stand out among finalists.
Morrill Scholarship: Weak vs. Strong
"As captain of my soccer team, I learned how to lead by example and motivate my teammates. I helped our team develop a stronger practice culture and we improved our record significantly. At Ohio State, I plan to bring this same leadership mentality to everything I do."
"My school had no mental health resources for student athletes — coaches didn't address it and players didn't talk about it. I started a weekly peer check-in that grew from four people to thirty over one season. Ohio State's new Student Wellness Center and the Athletics department's mental health initiative suggest the institution is moving in the same direction. I want to be part of that work."
