Essay Overview

For 2026-27, Auburn University requires no essay for general first-year admission — the personal statement is optional. The essays that count are for the Honors College (confirmed 2026-27): a required 600-word essay on your goals and how Honors furthers them, plus a second required 600-word essay chosen from three options (a meaningful object, an activity that creates "flow," or a quote that shaped your values).

What They're Really Looking For

1
Essay 1 needs the origin AND the fit. Auburn Honors asks for your goals, the experiences that shaped them, and how the Honors College furthers them. Cover all three — a goal with no origin, or no concrete Honors connection, leaves it half-answered.
2
Pick the Essay 2 prompt you can make specific. The object, the "flow" activity, and the quote all reward one concrete, particular thing — a real object with a real story beats a philosophical abstraction about any of them.
3
Show, don't claim. Auburn Honors reads for genuine intellectual character. Reveal it through a specific scene or decision rather than stating "I am curious and driven."

The #1 Failure Mode

⚠️
Most Common Mistake

Answering only half of Honors Essay 1. The prompt has two parts — your goals and their origin, AND how Auburn's Honors College specifically furthers them — and applicants routinely nail the goals but never connect to the program. A goal with no origin story, or an Honors essay that could be sent to any honors college, both underperform.

Weak vs. Strong: Score Benchmarks

⚠️ Weak (~55/100)
"My goal is to become a doctor because I want to help people. I have always been passionate about science and helping others. The Auburn Honors College will challenge me academically and give me the resources and community I need to achieve my dream of making a difference in medicine."
✓ Strong (~84/100)
"I want to study biomedical engineering because I spent a summer rebuilding my grandfather's wheelchair with parts from three broken ones, and I couldn't stop thinking about how badly designed most of it was. Auburn's Honors College — small research-based seminars and early lab access — is where I want to keep asking why the tools meant to help people are so often afterthoughts, and start designing better ones."
