Essay Overview

USD requires just one supplemental essay: a straightforward 250-word "Why USD?" prompt. This streamlined approach lets the school focus on understanding your fit with their specific programs and community rather than testing your versatility across multiple prompts. The core question is whether you've done genuine research and can articulate why USD's particular academic offerings, culture, and location matter to you.

Why USD? 250 words Required

What They're Really Looking For

1
Name specific schools and programs, not vibes. USD is a Catholic research university with strong programs in business (Burnham-Moores Center), engineering, and nursing. Reference actual department names, school-specific resources (like the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice if you care about social impact), or named centers. Saying "I want to study with motivated students in San Diego" won't differentiate you--saying "USD's business ethics curriculum aligns with my commitment to sustainable finance, and the Kroc Institute's partnerships excite me" shows you've actually explored the catalog.
2
Connect location to academic purpose. USD's Mission Valley campus in San Diego offers real advantages: proximity to biotech hubs, marine research opportunities, and partnerships with local nonprofits and hospitals. Don't just praise San Diego's weather or beaches. Instead, explain how the school's specific geographic position enables your academic or professional goals--e.g., "USD's nursing program partnerships with Scripps Health and UCSD Medical Center will deepen my clinical experience" or "The school's proximity to marine biotech companies supports my research interests in ocean conservation."
3
Show you understand USD's Jesuit identity. USD emphasizes Jesuit values--cura personalis (care for the whole person), social justice, and ethical leadership. If these align with your values, say so explicitly and with evidence. Reference service initiatives, the Jesuit mission statement, or how USD's commitment to faith-informed ethics resonates with your own worldview. If you're not religious, that's fine--focus instead on USD's commitment to social responsibility and ethical reasoning in your field.
4
Avoid generic "reach/safety" positioning. The most common failure mode at USD (52% acceptance) is writing as if it's a backup school. Applicants sometimes treat "Why USD?" as a checkbox, listing generic reasons (good school, nice campus, strong academics) that could apply to 50 other universities. USD admissions teams notice the difference between "USD is a great fit because..." (lazy) and "I've researched USD's [specific program/initiative] because [specific reason]" (engaged). Treat this as a genuine conversation about your match with their institution, not a formality.

The Official Prompt — 2025-26

Required 1 — Idea/Experience & Your Future at USD
Required350 words

"At the University of San Diego, we believe education should spark curiosity, foster connection, and prepare students to make a meaningful impact in the world. Tell us about an idea or experience that has shaped your worldview or inspired you to learn more. Why is this important to you, and how do you see it connecting with your future at USD?"

Required 2 — Choose One of Three
Required350 words

A (Community): "USD is committed to fostering a community where everyone feels a sense of belonging and purpose… what does community mean to you? How have you helped create inclusive, welcoming spaces for others, and what have you learned?"

B (Changemaker): "As a proud Changemaker Campus… Write about one of the challenges facing humanity today. Why does it matter to you?…"

C (Faith & Spirituality): "As a contemporary Catholic university… Share how faith or spirituality—your own or someone else's—has shaped a perspective, experience, or decision."

The #1 Failure Mode

⚠️
Most Common Mistake

Treating USD as a generic California Catholic university. USD's location — near the border, near Latin America, in one of the most economically dynamic regions in the US — is a genuine academic asset that differentiates it from Pepperdine, Santa Clara, and Gonzaga. Not engaging with the San Diego context misses the most distinctive thing about USD.

Weak vs. Strong: Score Benchmarks

⚠️ Weak (~50/100)
"USD's Catholic values and strong business program make it an ideal fit for me. I am excited to study business in a faith-based environment that prioritizes ethical leadership. San Diego's beautiful climate and vibrant community are also very appealing, and I look forward to contributing to the USD community through service and academic excellence."
✓ Strong (~78/100)
"I want to study cross-border trade policy — specifically how small businesses on both sides of the US-Mexico border navigate regulatory complexity. USD's proximity to Tijuana makes it one of the few places where that research can be done in real time, not in archives. The Knauss School's business curriculum combined with USD's access to the border economy is the specific academic environment I'm looking for."
