Essay Overview

Pepperdine requires one substantive essay addressing both why you're drawn to a Christian university environment and how you'll contribute to faith conversations on campus. This 500-word maximum essay is the core vehicle for assessing whether you understand Pepperdine's distinctive mission—the integration of faith and learning—and whether you can engage authentically with questions of meaning, purpose, and truth alongside students and faculty of diverse beliefs. The prompt is less about your personal faith credentials and more about your intellectual and communal readiness to participate in a faith-centered liberal arts community.

What They're Really Looking For

1
Distinguish 'conversations' from 'declarations'. Pepperdine uses 'conversations of faith' deliberately—it's not asking you to profess Christian belief or prove doctrinal alignment. The strongest essays show curiosity about how people of different (or no) religious backgrounds wrestle together with questions of meaning, ethics, vocation, and purpose. If you're Christian, don't assume that's your essay's argument; if you're not, don't apologize or overexplain. Instead, show intellectual honesty about why engaging with ultimate questions in a faith-centered community matters to you.
2
Connect Christian university to your intellectual needs. Address the 'why Christian university' part directly: What does a faith-integrated education offer that a secular liberal arts school wouldn't? Consider Pepperdine's explicit framing of vocation (not just career), its emphasis on purpose and service, or its tradition of asking 'what am I called to do?' alongside 'what do I want to study?' Show that you've thought about why a community that takes spiritual questions seriously aligns with how you learn and grow.
3
Specify what you'll bring to faith conversations. Move beyond listening to contributing. What perspective, experience, question, or intellectual rigor will you bring to Pepperdine's faith dialogue? This could be a specific ethical issue you're grappling with, a background that shapes how you engage with faith questions, a skill (e.g., storytelling, bridge-building across difference), or a commitment to asking hard questions. The admissions team wants to envision you as an active participant, not a passive consumer of a faith-centered environment.
4
Avoid generic 'beautiful campus' or 'Christian box-checking'. The most common failure is treating this essay as either a love letter to Malibu's scenery or a credential audit ('I go to youth group and I'm excited about chapel'). Pepperdine already knows its location is stunning and already understands that some applicants are devoutly Christian. Instead, engage with the mission—why the integration of faith, learning, service, and purpose speaks to who you are and what you're becoming. Show that you've read beyond the mission statement and thought about what it means to live it.

The Official Prompt — 2025-26

Christian University & Conversations of Faith
Required300–500 words

"Pepperdine is a Christian university where all are welcomed and encouraged to challenge each other in the pursuit of truth. Students, faculty, and staff members from all backgrounds participate in conversations of faith inside and outside of the classroom. Considering how Pepperdine is a Christian university, why are you interested in attending, and how would you contribute to conversations of faith on campus?"

The #1 Failure Mode

⚠️
Most Common Mistake

Treating this as a generic personal values essay without engaging with Pepperdine's specifically Christian, service-oriented mission. Or conversely, listing Christian credentials without showing how faith has shaped actual decisions or actions. Pepperdine wants evidence of values in action, not faith affiliation.

Weak vs. Strong: Score Benchmarks

⚠️ Weak (~51/100)
"My Christian faith has always been central to my life. Growing up in a church community taught me the importance of service and helping others. At Pepperdine, I look forward to being part of a faith-based community that shares my values and pursuing my education in an environment that integrates faith and learning."
✓ Strong (~80/100)
"My faith community runs a free medical clinic for uninsured workers in our area. I started volunteering at fourteen and am now managing patient intake and translation for Spanish-speaking patients. That work taught me that service is not a supplement to professional life — it is the point of it. Pepperdine's integration of faith and vocation is the specific framework I want for my professional education."
