Name the specific spark, not the field. At 150 words, you have no room for "I've always loved biology." Open with a concrete moment--the loon tangled in fishing line, a patient interaction, a discovery that made the field real. Then show one tangible step you took (shadowing, research project, volunteer work) and connect it to a specific UMN program like UROP, Environmental Science Policy & Management, or a named major. This three-part arc (spark → action → UMN direction) is what admissions officers are trained to spot.

Nursing: pick one story, dig deep. Don't list five reasons you want to be a nurse. Instead, choose one powerful experience--perhaps the time a nurse's intervention changed a family member's trajectory, or your own hospitalization where you witnessed exceptional care. Explore what that experience revealed about your core motivation: Do you crave the scientific problem-solving? The one-on-one human connection? The ability to advocate for vulnerable populations?
