Essay Overview
Scripps College requires one concise supplemental essay that asks you to articulate your fit with the institution. With just 250 words, you'll need to demonstrate genuine knowledge of Scripps' curriculum, community values, and how they align with your academic and personal goals. The college is essentially asking: Do you understand who we are, and can you articulate why you belong here?

What They're Really Looking For
1
Name specific academic strengths beyond rankings. Scripps is known for its strong liberal arts curriculum and the Claremont Colleges consortium, but don't just say that. Reference actual programs, departments, or interdisciplinary opportunities—like its collaboration with CMC's business programs, HM's engineering resources, or specific research initiatives. Show you've explored the course catalog and can articulate which classes or professors genuinely excite you.
2
Connect to the women's college mission intentionally. Scripps' identity as an all-women's college is central to its community. Rather than a generic statement about girl power, explain specifically how a women-centered learning environment will support your goals—whether that's leadership development in STEM, access to female mentors in your field, or the particular culture of collaboration and support you've researched. Admissions officers can tell if you're checking a box.
3
Demonstrate knowledge of student life and culture. Go beyond academics. Scripps has distinct traditions (like Midnight Breakfast, the Honor Code) and a particular residential culture as a smaller college within the Claremont system. Mention a club, tradition, or community aspect you've learned about that resonates with how you want to spend your college years. This shows you've done real research, not just skimmed the website.
4
Avoid the 'I want to be part of something bigger' trap. Many applicants mention the Claremont Colleges consortium as a draw, but then make it sound like Scripps is interchangeable with any of them. Be explicit about why Scripps specifically—its size, its curricular philosophy, its community character—matters more to you than Harvey Mudd or Pomona. Admissions offices notice when candidates seem to be using the same essay across multiple schools.
The Official Prompt — 2025-26
"Why have you chosen to apply to Scripps College?"
"Choose one: (A) If you could trade lives with someone (fictional or real) for a day, who would it be and why? (B) You've invented a time machine! When and where is your first destination and why? (C) You have just been invited to host your own podcast. What will you talk about and why?"
The #1 Failure Mode
Writing a generic women's college or liberal arts essay. Scripps's strongest differentiator is the 5C Consortium — students who don't engage with cross-campus opportunities are missing what makes Scripps genuinely distinctive from standalone women's colleges.
Weak vs. Strong: Score Benchmarks
"Scripps College's beautiful campus and strong humanities program make it an ideal environment for my academic and personal development. The supportive community of women scholars will help me grow as a thinker and leader. I am excited to explore the Claremont Colleges and take advantage of the many opportunities available through the consortium."
"I want to study environmental humanities — the history and philosophy of how human cultures understand their relationship to the natural world. Scripps's Core in Interdisciplinary Humanities is the strongest foundation for that kind of work at the undergraduate level. The 5C access means I can pair it with Pitzer's environmental policy courses and Pomona's biology labs without leaving the consortium."
