Essay Overview

For 2026-27, the University of Oklahoma requires no essay for admission, but offers three optional supplemental essays (650 words each) on leadership, community/cultural service, and career interest. They are "optional" in name only: skipping them makes you ineligible for OU's leadership, community-service, and departmental scholarships. So for most applicants, they're worth writing well. (Wording is stable year-over-year — verify on the live OU/Common App.)

What They're Really Looking For

1
"Optional" here means "write them if you want scholarships." Skipping the essays removes you from major scholarship pools. Treat them as expected, not optional, unless you're not seeking aid.
2
Answer the "why" each prompt asks for. Each prompt asks not just what you did but WHY it mattered to you — leadership you value, service you chose, a field you're drawn to. Ground each in a specific experience.
3
Don't recycle one essay across all three. Leadership, service, and career are different lenses. Show a different facet of yourself in each rather than repeating the same story.

The Official Prompts — 2026-27

Leadership Essay
Optional · scholarship-gated≤650 words

"Please share your leadership experiences and why they are important to you."

Community & Service Essay
Optional · scholarship-gated≤650 words

"Please describe your cultural and community service activities and why you chose to participate in them."

Career Interest Essay
Optional · scholarship-gated≤650 words

"What is your career area of interest, and why do you have a desire to work in this particular field?" (Wording stable year-over-year — verify on the live app.)

The #1 Failure Mode

⚠️
Most Common Mistake

Skipping the "optional" essays, or writing all three the same way. Because they're labeled optional, applicants leave them blank — and forfeit scholarship eligibility. The second miss is answering only the "what" (a list of activities) without the "why" each prompt explicitly asks for.

Weak vs. Strong: Score Benchmarks

⚠️ Weak (~54/100)
"Leadership is very important to me. As captain of my team and president of several clubs, I have developed strong leadership skills. I learned how to motivate others, manage my time, and work as part of a team. These leadership experiences are important to me because they have helped me grow as a person and prepared me for future success in college and beyond."
✓ Strong (~83/100)
"My leadership experience is a group chat I never wanted to run. When our marching band's director went on medical leave mid-season, the seniors froze, so I started posting the day's plan every morning — not because I was in charge, but because someone had to be. By November, freshmen were asking me, not the sub. What it taught me is that leadership is mostly the willingness to go first when going first is uncomfortable. I care about it because I've seen what happens to a room when no one will."
