Essay Overview

Elon's writing supplement is a "Think Fast" set of short, personality-forward prompts β€” meant to be brief, genuine, and fun. For 2026-27 there are four: a compact "what at Elon has caught your eye?" (150 words), an identity reflection (200 words), a three-song "perfect playlist," and a "top 5" of your choosing (150 words). Only the first is a Why-Elon prompt; the rest are about who you actually are. The whole set rewards specificity and a real voice over trying to impress.

What Caught Your Eye at Elon 150 words Required
Identity 200 words Required
Perfect Playlist 3 songs Required
Your Top 5 150 words Required

What They're Really Looking For

1
For "what caught your eye" β€” name real Elon specifics, briefly. This 150-word prompt is the only Why-Elon in the set. Skip "beautiful campus" and rankings; name one or two genuine, non-obvious Elon things β€” an Elon Experiences track (study abroad β€” Elon is #1 nationally for participation β€” undergraduate research, internships, service, leadership), a Living-Learning community, a program in the School of Communications, a specific engaged-learning course β€” and a real reason it excites you. Specific and lively beats comprehensive.
2
For the identity prompt β€” show, don't label. "What aspect of your identity do you find most meaningful, and why?" (200 words) rewards a specific, concrete facet of who you are and how it actually shapes you β€” not a list of identity labels or a generic "my culture is important to me." Ground it in a moment or habit that only you could write.
3
For the playlist β€” pick songs that reveal you, not that impress. Three songs (title + artist) that Elon turns into a class playlist. Choose tracks that genuinely say something about your personality or values; there's no "smart" answer here, and trying to look impressive is the tell. Honest beats curated.
4
For "top 5" β€” choose a theme only you would. Any theme (top 5 recipes, trail runs, anime characters, bus routes…) plus a short "why" that gives a real glimpse of you (150 words). The theme itself is half the answer β€” the more distinctive and true-to-you, the better. Explain why these five, not just what they are.

The #1 Failure Mode

⚠️
Most Common Mistake

Describing Elon's beautiful campus and friendly community without engaging with the Elon Experiences framework or a specific program. Elon's high acceptance rate means the essay filters primarily for students who chose Elon intentionally. Enthusiasm without specificity signals a student who didn't research carefully.

Weak vs. Strong: Score Benchmarks

⚠️ Weak (~50/100)
"Elon's beautiful campus and strong sense of community make it a perfect fit for me. I am excited to study communications and take advantage of the many opportunities Elon offers. The school's emphasis on experiential learning and study abroad aligns perfectly with my goals for personal and professional growth."
βœ“ Strong (~78/100)
"The Periclean Scholars program is the specific reason Elon is on my list. Three years building a global development project with a cohort of peers β€” one country, one problem, sustained engagement β€” is the kind of learning I won't get in a classroom. My interest in sustainable agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa is already focused enough to pitch; Periclean is the structure that would make it actionable."
