For 2026-27, University of Vermont removed its entire optional supplemental short-answer block — the old "Why UVM?", Ben & Jerry's charitable-flavor, identity, environment, life-soundtrack, and favorite-sentence options are all gone. UVM's Chief Enrollment Officer said the goal was to "reduce barriers and stress for students while maintaining a meaningful, holistic review," and pointed to rising application volume and the growing role of AI in student writing. UVM's own words: "one strong, authentic essay — the Common or Coalition Application's personal statement — can often do that work well." So the personal statement is now the only essay UVM reads, and it carries all the fit-and-character weight the optional prompts used to hold — read through UVM's holistic lens of authentic voice, values, relationship to place, and identity.

Write in a genuinely authentic voice — UVM said so out loud. UVM's own framing for the change is "one strong, authentic essay," and its enrollment chief named AI in student writing as a concern. So the fastest way to lose is a smooth, generic, ChatGPT-flavored personal statement ("a tapestry of experiences," "deeply passionate about making an impact"). Sound like a real 17- or 18-year-old. One specific, weird, true detail only you could write beats a paragraph of polish.

Let real values show through action — don't announce them. The removed Ben & Jerry's and environment prompts were UVM's way of reading for social conscience and sustainability. That instinct still reads strongly. But show it: not "I'm passionate about sustainability," but the specific thing you actually did, organized, or noticed. A value you demonstrate beats a value you claim, every time.

If your essay touches a place or a community, make it specific. The old environment and identity prompts rewarded a concrete relationship to a place, the natural world, or a community — and that still lands. Not "I love the outdoors," but the specific trail, kitchen, block, or team that shaped how you see. (You do not need to name UVM, Vermont, or the Green Mountains — this is the personal statement, not a "Why UVM" essay.)
