Essay Overview

University of Vermont requires a single supplemental essay focused on demonstrating genuine interest in the school. You'll write one 250-word response explaining why UVM is the right fit for you, with emphasis on specific programs and community elements that align with your goals. This essay answers the fundamental question: Do you understand what UVM offers, and can you articulate why it matters to your educational journey?

Why UVM? 250 words Required

What They're Really Looking For

1
Name actual programs or schools within UVM. UVM has distinct colleges (Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, etc.) and honors programs. Reference the specific school or major you're targeting, not just "UVM" generically. Admissions officers can tell when you've actually explored their website versus submitted a template response. Mention a named professor, lab, or initiative if possible.
2
Connect to UVM's Green Mountain identity. UVM's location in Burlington and mission emphasize sustainability, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. If these values resonate with you, show it explicitly--don't just say "I like nature." Discuss how UVM's specific geographic position or institutional commitment to these values enables the work or learning you want to do.
3
Demonstrate knowledge of campus culture. UVM students value outdoor recreation, social responsibility, and an inclusive community. If you've visited, mention a specific conversation or experience. If not, reference the residential college system, student organizations, or the Burlington location's role in your academic and personal growth. Vague references to "community" or "diversity" won't stand out.
4
Avoid the "safety school" trap. With a 67% acceptance rate, UVM attracts some students who view it primarily as a backup. Admissions committees recognize when interest feels obligatory rather than genuine. Your essay must convey authentic enthusiasm for UVM specifically--not just "it has programs I'm interested in." If you can't write convincingly about why UVM excites you, that lack of enthusiasm will show.

The Official Prompt — 2025-26

Optional Short Answer — Choose One of Six
Optional≤500 words

If you would like an opportunity to further present yourself to the Admissions Committee, you may submit a short answer to one of the following prompts (500 words):

A. "Why UVM?"

B. "Established in Burlington, VT, Ben & Jerry's is synonymous with both ice cream and social change. The 'Save Our Swirled' flavor raises awareness of climate change, and 'I Dough, I Dough' celebrates marriage equality. If you worked alongside Ben & Jerry, what charitable flavor would you develop and why?"

C. "UVM is a community that celebrates the unique identity of every student, faculty and staff member. Tell us how your identities have shaped the ways you interact with the world."

D. "From the Green Mountains to Lake Champlain to our campus, UVM students are inspired by our location to think about their relationship to the environment. What does your relationship with your environment look like?"

E. "If you could pick one song to be the soundtrack of your life, what would it be? What is your connection to the song?"

F. "What is your favorite sentence from your application essay?"

The #1 Failure Mode

⚠️
Most Common Mistake

Saying you love Vermont's natural beauty and UVM's environmental programs without showing any intellectual engagement with the specific research or programs available. UVM's high acceptance rate means the essay filters for genuine fit — students who explain exactly what they'll do with Vermont as a classroom write significantly stronger essays.

Weak vs. Strong: Score Benchmarks

⚠️ Weak (~50/100)
"I want to attend UVM because of its strong environmental studies program and beautiful Vermont setting. I have always been passionate about the environment and sustainability, and UVM's commitment to these values aligns perfectly with my own. Burlington's vibrant community and outdoor culture also appeal to me greatly."
✓ Strong (~78/100)
"I want to study the economics of sustainable land use — specifically how farmers make decisions about conservation versus production when subsidy structures create the wrong incentives. UVM's Rubenstein School sits in the middle of Vermont's working agricultural landscape, which means the research isn't hypothetical. The proximity to actual farms, farmers, and state policy makers is the specific resource I need."
