Essay Overview

UC Davis requires four essays from a pool of eight Personal Insight Questions (PIQs), each 350 words. Together, these four essays should function as a constellation--each illuminating a distinct dimension of who you are--to create a three-dimensional portrait of your intellectual engagement and values. UC Davis is the nation's premier One Health and agricultural research university; admissions readers will evaluate whether your academic interests and problem-solving mindset align naturally with Davis's transdisciplinary approach to human health, animal health, and environmental systems.

What They're Really Looking For

1
Choose four essays that don't overlap. Your strongest application uses all four essays to illuminate different dimensions of yourself. If you select PIQ 5 (Challenge) and PIQ 1 (Leadership) but frame both around 'overcoming adversity to lead my team,' you've wasted two essays. Map your choices first: Does PIQ 6 (Academic Subject) show intellectual depth in systems thinking? Does PIQ 3 (Talent) reveal a hands-on skill? Does PIQ 7 (Community) demonstrate collaborative impact? The reader should see four distinct facets, not repetition.
2
Embed One Health thinking without name-dropping. UC Davis's identity revolves around integrated human, animal, and environmental health. If you're interested in public health, food systems, disease ecology, veterinary science, or environmental sustainability, let that systems-level thinking emerge naturally through your chosen examples. Write about how you connected a biology project to real-world food security, or how a volunteer experience made you see animal welfare and human nutrition as linked--not because Davis values it, but because you genuinely think that way.
3
Show intellectual curiosity, not just achievement. PIQ 6 (Academic Subject) is your chance to reveal how your mind works. Don't just list accomplishments ('I got an A in AP Biology'). Instead, describe a moment when a concept surprised you, when you pursued a question beyond the syllabus, or when you realized two subjects were connected in an unexpected way. Davis admissions readers evaluate whether you're the kind of student who will thrive in a research-intensive, collaborative learning environment.
4
Avoid generic resilience narratives in Challenge essays. PIQ 5 is where many applicants default to 'I faced [hardship], I persevered, I grew.' That's honest but forgettable. The strongest UC Davis candidates show how a specific challenge changed their perspective or problem-solving approach in measurable ways. Did struggling with a concept lead you to develop a new study method? Did a setback reveal an assumption you were making? Admissions officers at a research university want to see how struggle shaped your intellectual habits, not just your character.

The Official Prompt โ€” 2025-26

PIQ 1โ€“8: Choose 4 (350 words each)
Requiredโ‰ค350 words each

"Choose 4 of 8 UC Personal Insight Questions: (1) Leadership experience. (2) Creative expression. (3) Greatest talent or skill. (4) Educational opportunity or barrier. (5) Most significant challenge. (6) Academic subject that inspires you. (7) What have you done for your school or community? (8) What makes you a strong UC candidate?"

The #1 Failure Mode

โš ๏ธ
Most Common Mistake

Writing a generic UC campus essay without naming UC Davis's specific strengths. UC Davis is often treated as a second-choice UC โ€” essays that don't engage with its #1 vet med ranking, agricultural research infrastructure, or medical center signals the student didn't research carefully.

Weak vs. Strong: Score Benchmarks

โš ๏ธ Weak (~50/100)
"UC Davis's strong biology program and vibrant campus community make it an ideal choice for my undergraduate education. I am passionate about the environment and excited to study at a university with such a strong commitment to sustainability. Davis's beautiful campus and college-town atmosphere are also very appealing."
โœ“ Strong (~78/100)
"I want to study the intersection of food systems and public health โ€” specifically how agricultural practices upstream affect nutritional outcomes downstream. UC Davis is the only university where I can take agricultural economics, food science, and epidemiology in one coherent program, all grounded in the Sacramento Valley's actual farming infrastructure. The UC Davis Medical Center gives me access to the public health data side. The field isn't hypothetical here."
