Essay Overview

Georgetown requires four essays totaling approximately 2.5–3 pages (single-spaced), measured in page length rather than word count—a deliberate format choice that tests your ability to sustain narrative and argument at length. Three essays are universal (significant activity, personal/creative reflection, talents/skills), and one is school-specific, asking you to connect your goals to your chosen school or program. What They're Really Looking For

Show cura personalis, don't name it. Georgetown's admissions officers read thousands of essays that drop "cura personalis" or "men and women for others" as a signal without demonstrating it. Instead of writing "Georgetown's Jesuit values resonate with me," tell a specific story: a volunteer project where you learned to see another person's dignity, a moment when you chose service over convenience, a conflict you resolved by centering the other person's humanity. The rubric rewards demonstration over terminology.

Use D.C. as your laboratory, not scenery. Georgetown's strongest essays treat Washington, D.C. not as a backdrop but as a concrete resource for your specific ambitions. If you're applying to McCourt, name the Capitol Campus structure (two years on Hilltop, two years embedded in policy work) and explain how this dual geography serves your goal. For SFS applicants, reference proximity to State Department, think tanks, or international organizations. Generic praise of "D.C.'s exciting energy" signals you haven't done the work.

Page length = permission to build an argument. Unlike most schools, Georgetown measures essays in pages, not word counts. This is intentional: they want to see if you can sustain a complex idea, build counterargument, and show nuance. Use this space. A personal essay about resilience that meanders for a full page without developing a coherent reflection will underperform a tightly-argued half-page. Structure your thought, not just your story.

Connect school-specific resources to your experience, never orphan-name-drop. Georgetown's rubric explicitly penalizes mentioning a program (Global Business Experience, language immersion, undergraduate research centers) without connecting it to your background and goals. Saying "Georgetown has the SFS in D.C., which interests me" is a red flag. Instead: "My summer in [specific place] taught me [specific skill gap]. Georgetown's SFS structure and D.C. proximity will let me [specific application of what you learned]." Resource specificity only works when it's personalized.

McCourt School of Public Policy: "For nearly 50 years, Georgetown University's McCourt School of Public Policy has equipped leaders and changemakers with the interdisciplinary skills to address local, national, and global policy problems. Undergraduate public policy students at Georgetown will have the unique opportunity to live and study on two campuses, spending their first two years immersed on the Hilltop, before completing the second half of their time at Georgetown on the Capitol Campus, immersed in the policy world.
