Essay Overview

For 2025-26 Fordham's supplemental essay is optional: you may answer one of four prompts in a maximum of 300 words. Fordham frames it as a chance to help the admission committee understand your unique perspective and potential contributions to the community. The options range from a personal-growth/active-citizen story, to how you'll contribute as a learner and leader, to Fordham's signature New York City prompt, to an open "something you're proud of." Though optional, at a 46% acceptance rate a thoughtful, specific response is a real opportunity to stand out.

What They're Really Looking For

1
Leverage the New York location strategically. Don't just say "I want to study in NYC." Instead, name specific internship opportunities, research labs, cultural institutions, or professional networks in New York that directly connect to your major or career path. Fordham's strength lies in its access to Manhattan—show you've thought about how you'll actually use it for your academic and professional growth, whether through business connections, clinical placements, or artistic venues.
2
Connect to Fordham's Jesuit values with specificity. Fordham emphasizes cura personalis (care for the whole person) and social justice. Don't just mention these buzzwords—explain how they resonate with your own experiences or values. Reference a specific service initiative, class, or campus organization you'll join, or describe a moment where Jesuit principles influenced your thinking. This shows you've researched the mission beyond the homepage.
3
Name your school and a real program or professor. Fordham has distinct schools (Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering, Nursing, etc.). Mention yours by name, and ideally reference a specific major, concentration, or even a professor whose work aligns with your interests. This level of detail signals you've done your homework and aren't using a template answer that could apply to any university.
4
Avoid the 'I want to help people' trap. Many Fordham applicants lean too heavily on vague statements about serving the community or being inspired by New York's diversity. These feel generic at 46% acceptance. Instead, be concrete: What will you do? Which student organization will you join? What skill or perspective do you bring to Fordham's community? The school wants to envision you as a real contributor, not just an admirer.

Optional — Choose One of Four Prompts — 2025-26

📌 The supplemental is optional. You may answer one (1) of the four prompts below in a maximum of 300 words.

Option 1: New Perspective & Growth
Choose 1 of 4≤300 words

"At Fordham, we expect students to care for and engage with their communities and be active citizens for positive change. Please share an experience you had that caused you to develop a new perspective, change your point of view, and/or empower you to take an action or be courageous. Your response should include examples of your personal growth (e.g., what did you learn, did your point of view change, did you develop new skills or strengths?)."

Option 2: Contribute as Learner & Leader
Choose 1 of 4≤300 words

"Fordham, as a Jesuit university, recognizes the dignity, uniqueness, and potential of each person. A Fordham education is student-centered and rooted in close collaboration among students, faculty, and staff. Describe how you would contribute to our campus community as an actively engaged learner and leader. Specifically draw on your personal story, identity, experiences, strengths, and perspectives."

Option 3: New York City
Choose 1 of 4≤300 words

"Our motto is ‘New York is my campus, Fordham is my school.’ New York City is a diverse and global city that provides Fordham students with a special kind of educational experience, full of both challenge and opportunity. What has prepared you to embrace the unique opportunity of living and learning in New York City?"

Option 4: Something You're Proud Of
Choose 1 of 4≤300 words

"Is there something that you are proud of that you would like to share with the Admission Committee?"

The #1 Failure Mode

⚠️
Most Common Mistake

Treating Fordham as a fallback without acknowledging what's genuinely distinctive about it. NYC location is not a substitute for engaging with the Jesuit intellectual tradition. Essays that mention only 'the city' without addressing Fordham's mission read as generic and careless.

Weak vs. Strong: Score Benchmarks

⚠️ Weak (~51/100)
"I chose to apply to Fordham because of its excellent business program and New York City location. Fordham's reputation and the opportunities available in NYC make it a great place to start my career in finance. The vibrant campus community is also very appealing to me."
✓ Strong (~81/100)
"The Jesuit approach to business education — one that requires ethics and philosophy coursework alongside finance — is the specific reason Fordham appealed to me before I looked at rankings. I want to work in financial services, but I also want to understand why financial systems produce the outcomes they do. Most business programs aren't interested in that question. Fordham's curriculum is."
