Lead with professional direction, not academic interest. Drexel's admissions team is assessing your co-op readiness--whether you can thrive in alternating cycles of classroom and full-time work. Generic statements like "I've always loved computer science" won't demonstrate this. Instead, anchor your essay in a specific professional goal or problem you've identified. For example: "After volunteering in a health clinic, I saw how fragmented data systems prevent clinicians from accessing complete patient histories--I want to build interoperable healthcare infrastructure" shows both direction and the initiative to seek real-world exposure. This specificity helps you land meaningful co-op placements.

Show initiative outside the classroom. Co-op students must navigate professional environments independently and drive their own learning. Your essay should illustrate times you've pursued experiences, built projects, or sought work without waiting for a school assignment. Did you start a side project? Volunteer at an organization? Reverse-engineer something? Lead a group without being assigned? These concrete examples of self-direction signal to Drexel that you're ready for the autonomy and accountability co-op demands. Passive achievement lists ("I got good grades") won't convince admissions you're co-op ready.

Emphasize learning-by-doing over theory alone. Drexel's entire philosophy centers on experiential learning--students thrive when they can work hands-on, build things, and learn from real professional experience. In your essay, highlight times you've learned best by making, experimenting, designing, or doing--not just reading or studying. If you're a Music Industry applicant, mention hands-on work with artists, producers, or label operations. If you're in Architecture or Architectural Studies, discuss projects where you designed, prototyped, or built something tangible. This demonstrates alignment with Drexel's core educational identity and your readiness to leverage the co-op structure.

Avoid generic "prestigious school" language. A common mistake at Drexel is writing as if you're applying to a generic prestige institution--mentioning only the school's ranking, location, or name-recognition. Drexel is fundamentally defined by its co-op program (running since 1919), not its selectivity. If you mention Drexel, be specific: reference the co-op directly, name the college or program that excites you (e.g., Westphal's music industry placement network, LeBow's business+engineering dual degree, or CCI's cybersecurity focus), or note how Philadelphia's professional ecosystem aligns with your field. Generic praise signals you haven't genuinely engaged with what makes Drexel different.
